Assistant manager Eric Gilchrist admits Ossett Albion are in a great position to build on a magnificent season next year.
Gilchrist, who was the manager of Albion for eleven years from 2000 to 2011, also sees similarities in the team he built in the mid-2000s that almost finished in the play-offs.
“Myself, Richard (Tracey) and Luke Potter have had this conversation numerous times and technically this side is the best squad this club has ever had,” Gilchrist said.
“I think there is a soft underbelly that at times we could do with two or three players that have a bit more mettle than we have at current.
“The team I had was one that if you wanted to play us at football, we’d play you at football. If you wanted to make it a battle, we could stand toe-to-toe with you in battle.
“I just feel that in one or two games this season when we needed to go toe-to-toe with people we were found wanting.
“What I will say about this side is that there is a lot of young players and they’re only going to get better. If someone had said at the start of the season, you’re going to finish in the top ten, everybody would have snapped their hand off.
“To have got into third place, I know we have drifted from that, it can’t be anything else than a successful season.
“The thing it has done is provided a platform for the club to build on. I think if we can retain these players and add a couple more, there is a chance of another good season next year.”
Albion visit Clitheroe tomorrow.
