Athersley Rec took another giant leap towards preserving their Premier Division status for another season.

Over a week ago, Athersley looked in serious trouble after losing the six-pointer at Garforth, two superb victories have put them on the brink of survival. One more win should be enough.

It was all positive from the start from Athersley. Several chances had come and gone by the time Danny Cawley struck to put the Rec in front on 17 minutes.

Cawley was at the centre of everything Athersley did. He came close to scoring again towards half-time.

He also played a part in the decisive second goal as his cross was turned home by Kai Hancock.

Nostell almost down

Nostell are effectively relegated after losing 1-0 at Worksop Town. Nostell would need to win their remaining three matches and hope everyone above them loses every game.

Pickering Town look on course to finish sixth after Sam Calvert’s goal downed Liversedge.

Pontefract Collieries led twice, but lost 5-2 to Thackley. David Burniston and Aaron Moxam struck for Pontefract, while Ryan Farrell (2), Paddy McGuire, Andrew Wood and Daniel Pett scored for Thackley.

Steve Hopewell’s double earned Maltby Main a 2-2 draw with Staveley Miners Welfare.

Chris Jenkinson and Brett Agnew both scored two as Bridlington Town beat Retford United 5-2 – Tom Fleming got their other goal.

Asif Hussain’s second half goal secured a 2-2 draw for Albion Sports at Armthorpe Welfare.
