Stand-in goalkeeper Matt Dempsey wrote his name in Shaw Lane Aquaforce folklore with a penalty save that proved crucial in his side’s victory.
Former Farsley defender Dempsey, in goal because of Tom Morgan’s suspension, pulled off his heroics at 0-0 before James Walshaw went onto score the winner.
There was plenty of drama in Aquaforce’s last of two games played at Frickley Athletic. Shaw Lane thought they had won a penalty early on, but the referee over-ruled his assistant, who was flagging for it.
Walshaw hit the crossbar before Dempsey made his mark. Former Guiseley striker Walshaw struck the winner on the stroke of half-time.
Shaw Lane Aquaforce (starting line-up): Dempsey: Wafula, Stohrer, Meynell, Radford, P Davidson, Thornhill, Potts, Bennett, Priestley, Walshaw.
