Stocksbridge Park Steels intend to fight the controversial red card handed to Corey Gregory late-on in the 2-0 at Spalding United on Tuesday night.

Referee Martyn Holmes showed Gregory a straight red card for violent conduct for incredibly ‘throwing mud’ at a Spalding player. Chris Hilton says his midfielder is completely innocent.

Gregory was one of three players sent off in the game – Matt Reay being the other Steels player, alongside Spalding’s Sam Murphy. A second Spalding player is believed to have been dismissed after the final whistle.

“We have asked Spalding for the video of the incident so we can see if we can appeal because otherwise Corey will miss the first three games of next season,” Hilton told Non League Yorkshire.

“In all my years of playing and managing, I have never seen anything like it. It was completely bizarre.

“How can you get sent off for violent conduct for throwing mud? All he was doing was wiping some mud off his knee. He even had his back turned to the Spalding players.

“Everyone just carried on, no-one reacted, apart from the referee.”

Gregory is not the first Yorkshire-based player to be red carded for throwing mud. Steve Wales was sent off playing for Nostell Miners Welfare at Parkgate last season for ‘throwing mud in the face of the assistant referee’.

He was subsequently found not guilty at a hearing at the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA.

Then Nostell manager Paul Lines described the incident as a “storm in a teacup”.
