Chris Spinks scored a superb hat-trick to help Westella VIP manager Leon Sewell get one over his old team.

The victory was Westella’s fifth straight win and it is a result that could provide a springboard into the FA Cup, a feat that did not look possible a few weeks ago.

It was the fourth time both sides had met this season with Selby Town winning the first three fixtures under previous manager Dave Ricardo.

Westella VIP took their time settling in to the opening 20 minutes as Selby where quick out of the blocks with lots of energy and enthusiasm but failed to have any real quality in the final third.

VIP failed to hit the target with both Sheppard and Andrews firing high and wide from the edge of the box.

The visitors had a corner on 35 minutes, VIP keeper Otley came and collected the corner under pressure and launched a counter attack that saw the ball drop to Spinks who took one touch and fired the ball from all of 30 yards on the volley up and over the Selby keeper for 1-0.

The visitors added some pressure on VIP but captain Matt Fyvie marshalled his defence well closing out any danger.

Selby began the second half brightly and continued to force VIP back but again their quality in the final third had no quality and failed to test Otley in the VIP goal.

VIP continued to get in behind and down the sides of the visitors and wasted a couple of half chances in front of goal.

With 20 minutes left to play Sheppard was brought down ten yards in to the Selby half for a free kick.

Spinks took the resulting free kick, taking one look up spotting the Selby keeper off his line to fire the ball from all of 40 yards up and over the keepers head and into the back seat of the net for a second time.

Five minutes later Otley released Alex Wood down the right hand side and drove into the Selby box

Wood was brought down by the Selby full back Ramsey. Spinks stepped up to fire the resulting penalty low and hard for 3-0 and his hat trick.

With 15 minutes to go VIP wasted further chances to increase their lead but held strongly for the victory with another clean sheet.

Westella VIP manager Leon Sewell: ”That’s five straight wins for us now, six wins if you take in to account our win over Lincoln Moorlands.

”The lads have found some fine form looking very bright and lively going forward and resolute at the back with some great defending.

“We’ve got another tough tie away to Yorkshire Amateurs on Saturday and I will be demanding the same levels of performances from the lads as we continue to aim for another three points on our travels.”
