Dan Thirkell has decided to end his 11-year spell with Harrogate Railway after their relegation back to the Toolstation Northern Counties East League.

Midfielder Thirkell was Railway’s longest-serving player and also the club’s captain – a role that was given to him last summer.

He was one of their most popular players having come through the Station View junior set-up. He bizarrely has the distinction of playing in every position for Railway, including goalkeeper.

Former Railway manager Martin Haresign gave him his debut at the age of 16. He has since played under Vince Brockie, Dave Morgan, Phil Sharpe, Nigel Danby, Billy Miller and the current incumbent Lee Ashforth.

Thirkell spoke to Non League Yorkshire last season about his memories of playing at Station View.
