Maltby Main 2-1 Wickersley
Maltby Main started their pre-season campaign with a win over local neighbours Wickersley at the Hallam Sports Park.
During the first half Main came close with efforts from John Ballington, Ryan Carroll, Daniel Reilly and Steve Hopewell as they created more in the opening exchanges. Although Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior League Wickersley did come close when Thomas blazed over the bar from six yards out. It wasn’t until the 43rd minute when the returning Reece Wesley headed home from a well worked set piece to put Main one up at the break.
The first 15 minutes of the second half were evenly matched and then Main made wholesale changes with 11 substitutions, which immediately paid dividends as Tyran Naylor hammered home on his debut after a goal mouth scramble.
The game ebbed and flowed with good opportunities for both sides and on 72 minutes Naylor brought down a Wickersley player in the area and the resulting spot kick was scored by Daugherty.
Main head to the North East this Thursday for a mini tour where they play Northern League Division One sides Dunston UTS and Newton Aycliffe on Thursday and Saturday respectively.
Joint manager Spencer Fearn:
“We knew playing Wickersley would be a tough test and it was the type of game we needed for our opener, they are a good side and will do well in the County Senior League next season.
“It was pleasing to see the chances we created and also to see many of the young players that will represent our Reserves getting a chance to shine. Overall we were happy with performance.”
