The Bill Cook memorial trophy was won by Pontefract Collieries after new signing Chris Wood scored a second half double.

The match staged between the arch rivals was in memory of Cook, a local sports trophies businessman, who passed away late last year.

Cook was long-term Colls supporter and he would have been impressed with the new-look Pontefract side which has strength in every department.

Glasshoughton, themselves a re-built team, were organised and their recent signing Richard Collier blasted them ahead on the half-hour mark with a wonderful long range strike from a wide position.

Welfare then shot themselves in the foot after a mix-up between defender Andy McManus and goalkeeper Ben Saynor. The ball was lost in an important area and Jordan Turner nipped in to score into the empty net.

Wood, a half-time substitute, made the difference with two early second half goals. He pounced from a scramble from a corner to score his first goal.

The former Frickley Athletic striker was then handed a back-post tap-in for the decisive third goal.
