Glasshoughton Welfare have a “good spine” in their team, according to Darren Holmes.
Holmes and Lee Vigars, Glasshoughton’s new joint bosses, have had to rebuild the Welfare side after various departures from Leeds Road.
The new-look side got their first outing in the 3-1 defeat at local rivals Pontefract Collieries on Tuesday night and Holmes was happy with what he saw.
“We had three or four of the lads from last year, but it is mainly a brand new team and I’m really pleased with how they have gelled together,” Holmes told Non League Yorkshire.
“We were organised and for the first 45 minutes we were excellent. They did everything we asked.
“We have been working on retaining the ball and moving it around quickly in training and it showed.
“We have got a solid 16 and we would like to bring in a couple more players into that. I also envisage that we will make signings as the season progresses.
“We have made some quality signings. Andy McManus is a rock at the back and we have Ben (Saynor) who has played for me before, in goal.
“We have a good spine to the team so we’re not far off.”
Vigars played for the likes of Pontefract during his playing days, but for the last 14 years he has been away from the NCEL scene as he has been running Wakefield City.
Holmes does have NCEL management experience from his spell with Nostell Miners Welfare nearly two years ago.
Holmes added: “It is good to be back involved.
“I did a bit with Wakefield City last year in a lower league, but I’m really pleased to be back in the Northern Counties East League.
“It is where I played my football and it is where I enjoy my football.”
