Lee Morris is hosting a football match to try and raise a lot of money for the family of his brother-in-law this coming Sunday.
The Goole AFC manager and his family were “left devastated” after his sister’s husband Garry Jones tragically passed away last month because of a blood clot on his heart at the age of just 31.
Morris has gathered a team of current and ex-semi-professional players to take on local over 35s team Plough on Sunday afternoon. He expects 40 players to be involved.
“It has left the family devastated and we’re just trying to provide for his funeral and for his wife and his two kids,” Morris said.
“It should be a good day and hopefully it will raise some money for them. I haven’t set a target because I just want to raise as much as I can.
“You don’t expect something like this and it has been a horrible time. Whether time will heal it, I don’t know. It is still very raw.
“Football pulls people together and the response I’ve had in the last two or three weeks from players who are coming down to play is phenomenal. I’ve been taken aback.”
A lot of Morris’ ex Frickley Athletic and Buxton team-mates are among the players taking part. The likes of Paul Pettinger, Chris Hilton, Mark Haran, Grant Black, Steven Robinson, Jonathan Groome, Neil Stevens, Joe Thornton, Matt Thornton and Nick Buxton have pledged to play.
Morris wants it to be a family day and there is games and a bouncy castle for children.
To raise further funds, there are a number of auction items, along with raffle prizes.
The match, which kicks off at 12pm, is taking place at the Queens Pub in Wath, Barnsley Road. The postcode is S63 6DQ.
