Lee Morris has been left stunned by the generosity of everyone who came to his football match after over £2000 was raised for the family of his brother-in-law.
Garry Jones passed away suddenly over a month ago and Goole AFC manager Morris decided to gather a team of ex-semi-professionals to help raise funds for his sister-in-law and her two children.
His side took on over 35s side Plough at the Queens Pub in Barnsley.
“It was absolutely brilliant, it couldn’t have gone any better,” Morris said.
“We raised over £2000 which is unbelievable because I was looking at a £1000 at a push. It is going to finish even higher because there are still some auction items that are yet to be sold.
“It has really struck a chord with people because when we (Goole) played Pontefract on Saturday, both sets of players had a whip-round and raised £160 between them.
“I”m completely overwhelmed by everyone’s support and Garry’s family are too. It is now going to become an annual event.
“I’m even bald now. We were in the pub and one of the lads got his head shaved for £100.
“They then turned to me and said: ‘how much for yours’? I said: ‘no chance’ before saying £200 and I mean, they must have got it in three seconds’.
“I’m going to have to walk round with a hat on for a while.”
Morris declined to supply Non League Yorkshire with an up-to-date photo of himself.
