Maltby Main’s first home pre-season friendly could not have gone much as they put in a fantastic display to beat a young Gainsborough Trinity side.

A fantastic through ball from Cheetham found Brunt on 12 minutes and he raced in to the penalty area and was brought down. Ryan Carroll slotted the penalty home to give Main an early lead.

Main did not have to wait long to double their lead when Steve Hopewell drove in from the left and the ball ricocheted off the Gainsborough centre half in to the net. On 20 minutes it was 3-0 when Carroll played a superb ball to the back post which Hopewell headed into the path of Ryan Poole who had made a tremendous run from deep to side foot home.

In the second half it was more evenly matched with Gainsborough going close from a free-kick and stopper Danny Rusling made a tremendous one handed save. On 72 minutes Carroll beat two men before putting Connor Greg in who finished superbly.

Maltby Main co-manager Spencer Fearn:

“This was a good work out and again we saw how well the young lads who have come into the squad are progressing, we had 11 lads under the age of 21 in the squad tonight, so this is encouraging for the future. The return of Lee Hill, Hibbert and the Poole brothers Jordan and Ryan was also pleasing and they all put in a good shift as they work to gaining full fitness.

Main play Frickley on Saturday at Muglet Lane.
