Getting their first win since November has given everyone at Worsbrough Bridge a massive lift, according to Ian Shirt.
Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Central Midlands League outfit Askern ended a dreadful run which stretched back to a win over Glasshoughton Welfare at the end of last year.
“It was very important that we got the monkey off our backs,” Shirt told Non League Yorkshire.
“Although myself and the players weren’t here for a lot of the results, it is all the lads wanted to talk about in the bar, saying ‘it’s the first win since November. They were buzzing.
“It shows how a win breeds confidence. We needed to get that first win before the season started and I’m confident we will do alright.
“We’ve got the fitness levels up which is good because towards the backend of last season I felt we tired towards the end of matches and we conceded a lot of goals.
“We are going in the right direction.”
Worsbrough followed up the Askern result with a very good display against Evo Stik Division One South side Stocksbridge Park Steels.
Stocksbridge won 4-2, but Bridge came back to level the game at 2-2 in the first half. Worsbrough also hit the post on two occasions. Shirt was very pleased.
“It was a fantastic performance, despite the result,” he added.
“It was a great comeback and we showed great spirit.
“I think it would have been fair if we had led at one point when we hit the post twice, (Stocksbridge manager Chris Hilton) Hilts might say different.
“I thought for the first 15 minutes we looked a bit shaky as people were still finding their places.
“Once as we settled we played some good football.”
Young striker Brad Kerr has turned down a substantial offer from another Division One club this week.
