Penistone Church 1-3 Shaw Lane AFC
Talisman Gav Allott underlined how important he is to Shaw Lane after coming off the bench to rescue his side at Penistone Church.
Shaw Lane more than deserved to win, but Penistone took some breaking down. Danny Joynes’ delightful strike close to half-time was one of Church’s few forays into Shaw Lane’s half.
For the most part, it was one-way traffic. All that was missing from Shaw Lane’s first half display was clinicalness. The craftsmen, Jono Wafula and Joe Thornton, teased and probed Penistone, but no-one got on the end of their work.
The goal from Joynes was a total bolt of the blue. Picking the ball out of the net was the only thing new Shaw Lane goalkeeper Jon Stewart had to do all night.
Allott was thrown straight into it after half-time and immediately caused problems. After Penistone survived several chances, the former Frickley striker finally equalised. Allott turned exquisitely on the edge of the box and sent a rasping low effort into the right-hand bottom corner.
The visitors continued to lay siege to Penistone’s goal. The second goal took some forcing as former Glossop striker Kieran Lugsden thought he had scored until a wonderful save kept his shot out. The ball ran loose and Darol Lucas, most recently of Ossett Town, pounced to score.
Allott clearly made the difference as Penistone could not handle him. His second goal of the evening came from the penalty spot.
