Glasshoughton Welfare scored five goals for the second time in five days when they beat ambitious West Riding County Amateur League side Steeton at Leeds Road.

With goalkeeper Ben Saynor leaving for Pontefract Collieries in midweek, joint managers Darren Holmes and Lee Vigars brought trialist stoppers Andy Holland and Danny King into the fray.

Another trialist was Castleford Sunday League player Jamie Simpson who came on in the second half and scored two goals.

Welfare went close in the first few minutes when the visitors goalkeeper Wayne Mahomet struggled to get to a corner but the ball was knocked wide. The ‘keeper was lucky minutes later when his poor clearance was picked up 30 yards out by Rich Collier whose first time shot was arrowing for the bottom corner of the net until a defender managed to deflect it for a corner.

Welfare’s Tom Coyles had a shot smothered before Collier gave the hosts the lead with a shot across the keeper.

Welfare were lucky on 32 minutes when a poor pass back put keeper Holland in trouble, but the keeper was quick to react to clear the danger.

Welfare went two up just before the break when a great ball over the top of the defence found Jermaine Moyce who rounded the keeper and tapped in.

Steeton started the second period in a determined mood and pulled a goal back when Sam Rooke headed a corner past sub keeper Danny King.

Welfare then had to soak up a lot of pressure but Nathan Keightley went close twice for welfare in a minute with a shot that Mahomet scrambled away and then he hit a cross come shot that cannoned of the far post.

Welfare increased their lead on 68 minutes when Coyles fed a ball to Ryan Poskitt on the edge of the area and his first time shot went into the far corner.

Simpson was now on for welfare and with his first touch he prodded the ball just wide. However he sealed the win on 79 minutes when he rounded Mahomet to poke home and then on 83 minutes he shot across the keeper into the far corner.
