Glasshoughton Welfare welcomed North Shields based Seaton Dalaval to Leeds Road on Saturday for their final pre-season friendly game.

Due to injuries, and work commitments, Welfare joint manager Darren Holmes had to make several changes from the team that had scored 17 goals in their last three games. Another trialist goalkeeper, Danny Waring, the former Goole AFC stopper played for Welfare and showed good confidence with his handling and distribution.

Welfare opened well and from an early corner visiting keeper Shaun White managed to claw a downwards header away and Andy Horbury hit a shot over the bar.

At the other end Scott Borthwick hit a shot over the bar from 30 yards but soon after Horbury had a good chance for welfare when a poor clearance from White fell to the welfare striker but his shot was collected by the back pedalling keeper.

A Jermaine Moyce lofted ball to the far post caused problems for the visiting defence, but Welfare could not capitalise on the chance as seconds later Moyce just failed to connect with a Rich Collier cross ball.

Seaton came close on the half hour mark when a 30 yard Jack Foalie volley beat Waring but sailed inches over the bar.

As the first half was coming to a close only last ditch defending stopped Welfare possibly scoring, but then Paul Haxon had a good chance down the left for Seaton but he shot wide of the far post. Moyce had a shot blocked by the legs of White at his near post with the last kick of the half.

Welfare opened the scoring on 58 minutes when a great ball from the right by Nathan Keightley found Horbury who brought the ball down and slotted home from 20 yards.

Within two minutes Seaton were level when good play on the left saw the ball reach Matthew Bailey who drove the ball home from the edge of the area.

Seaton were now on top and another clipped shot went just over the Welfare bar.

In the last quarter the game became a little feisty with a number of wild tackles going in from players of both sides. Referee Andy Smith showed good sense when asking for a player on each side to be substituted.

The last chance of the game fell to Welfare, with keeper White, who had been quick off his line all afternoon, blocking a Robbie Clayton effort.
