Ossett Town manager Grant Black wants to sign Jason Yates, but admits he faces a battle for his signature.

The Hemsworth Miners Welfare captain scored two spectacular goals in Ossett’s 3-2 win at Handsworth Parramore on Monday night.

He is playing for another interested West Yorkshire club tonight. The midfielder could still decide to reject any offers and remain at Hemsworth to lead them during their historic Toolstation NCEL Premier Division campaign.

“Hemsworth knew he was playing for us, it is no secret,” Black told Non League Yorkshire.

“He’s also playing for someone else tomorrow (Tuesday night) so we are facing competition for him. We have liked him for a long time and hopefully we can get his signature.

“He’s a quality player and he made a big difference for us. He’s a midfielder who wants to get on the ball and switch play. He’s also got an eye for goal so he’s any manager’s dream.”

The double from Yates and solitary goal from stand-in captain Tyrone Gay earned Ossett their win at Parramore.

Black said: “It was a great overall performance

“We have worked hard in pre-season and sometimes it takes time for things to gel.

“We have new bodies in and we have been trying out new formations. With only two games left in pre-season, we wanted to get everything ironed out and we played the formation that we will be playing on the 13th August.

“It looked really good. We gave a really good account of ourselves and for me, Handsworth have to be the favourites to win their league.

“To come here and play like we did is a massive bonus. It gives the lads a lot of confidence going into an important week.”
