Ossett Town fans must be hopeful of their club having a positive season after the impressive 3-2 victory at Handsworth Parramore.
Trialist and Hemsworth Miners Welfare captain Jason Yates stole the show with two brilliant first half goals for Ossett – a theme that has followed him from the beginning of pre-season.
He introduced himself to Ossett supporters in spectacular style by striking the ball over a stranded Parramore goalkeeper Archie Sneath from 30 yards in the opening five minutes.
Poor defending allowed the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division runners-up to equalise with a Colin Marrison header.
The Ossett of old would have folded at that point. Instead, Ossett kept their shape and created a couple of half-openings. Yates rewarded his colleagues’ efforts by smashing a screamer into the Sneath’s left-hand top corner.
The midfielder was involved again at the start of the second half as his drive from a scramble caused by corner was finished off by the returning Tyrone Gay.
The late introduction of Kieran Wells and Conor Higginson injected a bit of life into Parramore. Former Worksop Town man Higginson gave Parramore hope of an equaliser after scoring from a breakaway to reduce the deficit.
There was a scramble in the Ossett penalty area during stoppage time, but Grant Black’s held on to secure the victory.
Parramore’s FA Cup opponents Armthorpe Welfare beat Westella & WIllerby 3-1. Jonathan Mirfin, Neil Sheppard and an own goal sealed Armthorpe’s win.
Ossett Albion won 3-1 at Athersley Rec, with Adam Muller (2) and Connor Brunt scoring.
Thackley lost 1-0 to Harrogate Town under 21s.
