Adam Hayton’s penalty earned Glasshoughton Welfare their first league win of the new season  with a narrow home success over Rossington Main.

Welfare were two goals up in the first 20 minutes with goals from Nathan Keightley and Adam Walsh  and looked to be coasting. However the visitors hit back with two quick goals from Regan Kelly and Chris Savage.  Hayton won it for Welfare early in the second half scoring his third penalty kick in four days. It also secured Darren Holmes and Lee Vigars their first win as Welfare joint bosses.

The opening exchanges were fairly even although Jason Stokes hit an effort well over the bar for the visitors, whilst at the other end only the outstretched foot of a defender stopped the ball reaching Keightley as he prepared to bear down on goal.

Welfare took the lead on 12 minutes when a corner from the left by Keightley bamboozled keeper Ryan Musslewhite and flew directly into the top far corner of the net.

Eight minutes later another Keightley corner to the far post was headed home by Walsh for his second goal two games.

Welfare were coasting as Hayton hit a shot wide after a poor clearance by the keeper and then Andy Horbury shot just wide of the far post.

Welfare were rocked on twenty seven minutes when Rossington moved the ball quickly down the right before it was crossed into the 18 yard box and Regan Kelly volleyed past Dan Waring.

Things got worse for Welfare on t35 minutes when the ball was lost in midfield and it was played into Chris Savage who rounded Waring before tapping into an empty net.

Just before the break Horbury collected the ball and made great strides across the visitors area but his shot was well blocked by the body of Musslewhite.

The second half opened with a Rossington free kick drifting just wide of a post.

However, Welfare regained the lead on 52 minutes when defender Brad Kilner took the ball into the Rossington penalty area where he was hauled down by Niall Doyle. Hayton then stepped up to beat Musslewhite from the penalty spot.

The visitors seemed to have had the stuffing knocked out of them now and Welfare went looking for more goals. Keightley drove a shot wide before he brought the best out of Musslewhite with a powerful shot that the goalkeeper managed to push onto the bar and over. Callum Harrison headed narrowly wide and Rich Collier had a weak shot easily saved.

The Welfare defence seemed confident in the closing stages although Stokes fired just wide and in the last minute Waring made a good diving save to his left to keep out a 20 yards free kick. Welfare nearly had a fourth with virtually the last kick. Substitute Jason Kitchen had a close range shot which was saved by the legs of Musslewhite.

What They Said

Glasshoughton Welfare joint manager Lee Vigars

“Although we are happy with the result, we are not happy with the performance.  We were better in the previous two games but a win is a win. We started today strongly and deserved to be two up, then we switch off and let them back in.

“A few home truths were spoken at half time and I thought we looked a lot better. We now face Campion and hope to keep the run going.”
