Wayne Benn has hailed young defender Rogan Green for the way he has handled his promotion to Hemsworth Miners Welfare’s first team.
Green has partnered Harry Viggars in the centre-back slots in two of their three opening games. He is likely to get further game-time because new Wells captain Luke Danville is unavailable for a few more matches.
“I have to mention young Rogan Green,” Benn told Non League Yorkshire.
“He deputised for Luke Danville on Saturday and he was first class. He was a little nervous in the Runcorn Linnets and some of his decisions were a little bit where didn’t need to be, but he’s gradually growing in confidence and believing he is capable of playing at this level.
“He’s a fantastic lad and he has a great attitude. He’s big, strong and powerful and I thought, even though Nash (Connolly) and Del (Pollock) grabbed the headlines, Rogan Green was fantastic against Garforth.
“He was my man of the match.”
When Jason Yates was released two weeks ago, Benn confirmed that he was hoping to add three or four players into his squad.
Since then Derry Robson (dual-registered with Goole AFC) and Nick Guest have arrived. Because of his side’s form and the emergence of Green, the pair may be the only additions.
“Depending on what happens with Derry, that may be it for now,” he said.
“We have three people away so when they come back it gives 18 or 19 in the squad.
“I think it is the strongest squad that this club has ever had and I am excited about working with it when everyone is back available.”
