The new floodlights at Mannigham Mills were given a memorable first game as Glasshoughton Welfare and Campion shared six goals in an entertaining contest.

Welfare were two down after twenty minutes courtesy of a Scott Eastwood penalty and a Matthew Waller strike, but they hit back with goals from Callum Harrison and Richard Collier. They took the lead just after the break through Andy Horbury before Eli Hey soon levelled the scores for Campion.

The game started at a fast pace and Eastwood hit an early free kick over the Welfare bar. Welfare retaliated and a couple of high free licks into the hosts six yard area were collected by the confident Daniel Armitage.

After Brad Kilner hit a dangerous cross into the Campion goal area that was hacked away by a defender, the home team went to the other end and Waller, who was a thorn in the Welfare defence all evening, blazed a shot across goal.

Olly Maude had a great shot blocked, but the home side took the lead on thirteen minutes when Dan Waring, in the Welfare goal, brought down a home attacker and Eastwood slotted the resultant spot kick home.

Campion added to their lead on twenty minutes when Waller had a shot blocked but he followed up and his quick footwork saw him stroke the ball past Waring.

Welfare hit back two minutes later when a corner from the right was headed home by Harrison for his first goal for the club.

The visitors then went looking for another goal and Mike Brearley had a dangerous ball into the area kicked away for a corner. From that corner another well struck shot was deflected away. Nathan Keightley then mis-kicked when through on goal and Maude had another shot blocked for a corner.

The pressure told on the home defence on thirty three minutes when an Adam Hayton free kick to the far post was headed back to the opposite post and Collier rifled home.

Just after this Maude brought a great save out of Armitage and both he and Hayton had other efforts which cleared the home bar.

Welfare opened the second half in control and took the lead on Forty nine minutes. Keightley, showing great persistence, took the ball towards the near post and his cross was deflected into the area where Horbury reacted quickest and he bundled the ball home for his first competitive goal for the club.

Welfare could not keep the lead and two minutes after this Waring could not hold a fierce shot and after a scramble Hey managed to knock the ball home. Despite Welfare’s protests that the ball had been kicked out of Waring’s hands, the goal was given.

Chances fell to both sides in the final half hour. Armitage held onto the ball well from a Collier cross shot with the Welfare attack bearing down. Lewis Akeister shot over after being set up by Hayton.

For Campion, Waller shot over and then Waring made a great block in a one on one situation. The welfare keeper then saved his side in the last five minutes. He made a great low save to his left to push a shot away before tipping away a cross shot away as the home side went for the winner. Just after this he smothered a low shot..  The keeper was lucky on eighty eight minutes though when a fierce Jordan Missin free kick whistled just past his post.

Not to be out done, Welfare could have snatched it at the death when Hayton shot just over the bar.
