Lee Ashforth has resigned at Harrogate Railway

Lee Ashforth has resigned from his position as manager of Harrogate Railway after 17 months in charge at Station View.

Ashforth was promoted from his assistant’s role in May 2015 following the exit of Billy Miller to Tadcaster Albion, but was unable to build on the previous eighth-placed finish as the club were relegated.

He was given a second chance, but after seven games into the new season, Ashforth has decided that the time is right to depart.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have tendered my resignation at Harrogate Railway Athletic Football Club,” Ashforth said.

“The club has been a huge part of my footballing career spending three years as a player and now into my fifth as part of the management team.

“Results started well this season, winning 4 from 6 but then losing 3 on the trot and the manner of the defeats has left me in an uncomfortable position.

“I leave with no regrets as I feel I have given my all to a role that has been difficult at times but has allowed me to fulfill a dream of being a football manager at a club that I love.

“I have made some great friends at the club and I sincerely hope that my successor feels as warmly welcomed as I have done and brings this great club the success that it deserves.

“I cannot name everyone individually so thanks to all for the support I have been given and the players for their huge effort and commitment.

“My aim is to have a few days off and re-evaluate what I want to do and to get back into football when I feel ready and the right opportunity arises.”

“Harrogate Railway management would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Lee for his time at the club as both player and manager, all his hard work and to wish him all the best for the future.”

A further announcement about who will be placed in temporary charge of the first team will be made tomorrow.

Railway are inviting applications for the first team manager’s role, to be made in writing via post or email the Football Secretary, David Shepherd (shep@therailfc.com).

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 16th September.
