Bridlington Town had their opening FA Vase game of the season sown up within half-an-hour.
Bridlington were four goals to the good against a weakened Ammers side and the Seasiders will now host Daisy Hill in two weeks’ time, again on a Sunday because Scarborough Athletic take precedent – despite Bridlington’s status as their landlords.
It was always going to be a tough ask for the Ammers, who had five development team players in their squad and were without Joel Hughes and Chris Hitchings. The visitors made it easy for Bridlington with some kamikaze defending though
There was some brief joy in the fourth minute when Suwara Bojang brilliantly saved Brett Agnew’s penalty.
But the celebrations were short-lived as a moments later Bojang fired a clearance straight at Chris Adams, who duly accepted the gift.
The Ammers tried to play out from the box and they simply played into Brid’s hands. Ammers’ defence kept losing possession and they kept paying the price – Joel Sutton raced through from a mistake to add the second.
The third goal had a touch of quality about it – although the Ammers did lose the ball in the build-up. Sutton took the plaudits with a superbly flighted cross from the right which Agnew connected with.
The fourth soon arrived through a Benn Lewis tap-in.
There was a major chance of Brid reaching double figures. Fortunately for the Ammers, they were much tighter in the second half.
Bridlington still carved them open several times – scoring twice. Andy Norfolk scored within minutes of coming on, while Sutton doubled his tally in the last minute with a free kick.
