Selby Town midfielder Jason Crisp made the headlines for the second week running

Jason Crisp’s header guided resurgent Selby Town past high-flying Winterton Rangers to put his side on the periphery of the play-offs.

The first half goal was the highlight of a tight match of few chances, but full of maximum effort from both sides.

The win, Selby’s third in a row, fired them up to a point away from the top six.

All the attention was on Selby’s trio of stellar signings – Calum Ward, goalkeeper Pete Lawrie and left-back Tim Robertson.

The player all Selby’s supporters wanted to see, prolific former Tadcaster Albion striker Ward, put himself about, but his lack of match fitness was plain to see.

He did the cause the odd problem for Winterton side, managed by ex-Selby assistant Lee Hastings, that have surprised many this season after holding top spot a couple of times already.

Crisp’s header came at the end of the first half and Selby looked comfortable from there on.

Ash Hope and Liam Flanagan failed to convert chances to kill Winterton off as the game reached its closing stages. There was a couple of nervy moments in stoppage time, but Selby defended well and held out.
