Glasshoughton Welfare and Selby Town fought out a fairly tame draw in another local derby at Leeds Road on Tuesday night.

Chances were few and far between in front of a good crowd of 116, although the home side probably had the more clear cut ones and the visitors were grateful to new goalkeeper Peter Lawrie who pulled of at least three good saves.

Welfare were forced into a change in goal with Danny Waring suspended.  Andy Holland took his place between the sticks although troubled by an injury. Callum Harrison replaced Alex Marsh at full back and Andy Horbury replaced Ashley Scothern who was also carrying a slight knock.

Despite five ex-Welfare players being on the books of town this season only Nathan Perks appeared, as a late substitute.

The early pressure came from Welfare and Lawrie did well to just beat Andy McManus to a vicious corner whipped in from the left.

When the visitors attacked Holland showed a few early nerves but seemed well protected by the home defence.

As the interval approached Nathan to open the score Keightley fired a shot over the bar and then Lawrie made a great save from Rich Collier with his legs.

In the first few minutes of the second half welfare had two good chancesl to open the score. Firstly Collier struck the post after Keightley drove the ball in from the right. Just after Andy Horbury forced another great save from Lawrie. Selby caused problems midway through the half.

Holland had to be quick off his line to foil Wayne Brook after a great ball put him through on goal.  Brook then shot over the bar as did James Arnold. Jack Stocks headed an effort over the top and the home defence had a lucky escape when a weak punch out by Holland was fired back in but kicked off the line by a defender.

Keightley had a chance of the winner with seven minutes left. The diminutive striker bore down on goal from the right but his fierce shot was well palmed over the bar for a corner.

What They Said

Glasshoughton Welfare joint manager Lee Vigars

“A tough game tonight which has a similar feel to the Grimsby game. We’ve created some great chances and again come up against a keeper bang in form. On another night we win the points comfortably, but it’s still a good point against a lively Selby side.

“Our back four defended strongly again and the midfield four won their battles also. Winterton will be tough but we travel full of confidence.”
