A serious injury to Jack Stocks overshadowed in-form Selby Town’s League Cup victory over Albion Sports.

The game kicked into life when Selby attacker Tesfa Walton found himself running in open space with only an onrushing keeper to beat, the two clashed and by the letter of the law, Mark Bower saw red.

Stocks left the field on a stretcher 38 minutes in, with a suspected broken leg.

Hogg came on to replace Stocks and immediately made his presence felt, Will Ramsey also appearing calm under the pressure of ten man Albion. In the fifth minute of first half added time a free kick in range of the Robins goal was awarded to Albion and Asif Hussain duly dispatched it to give Albion an unlikely lead heading into the interval.

Town began the second period knowing they had to score first and needed to test the inexperienced Albion keeper, Ash Hope and Nathan Perks both had chances and should have done better whilst Albion missed an open goal to keep Town in the game.

Gary O’Neill, Calum Ward and Jason Crisp worked the ball through midfield as Town launched an attack but failed to find anyone in the box. Town received a free kick on 64 mins, Crisp stepped up and dispatched a low driving shot through the wall and past the keeper to put the Robins on level terms.

The ten men of Albion Sports showed good resilience as they kept Town out from three consecutive corners, Town struggled to break down the back four as the clocked ticked down and extra time drew ever closer.

The winner came on 80 minutes to the delight of the home crowd as Tom Hogg scored on the third rebound of a free kick to score his second goal in as many games and book the Robins ticket into the fourth round.
