Connor Glavin sealed Glasshoughton Welfare’s victory at Westella
Two late goals gave Glasshoughton Welfare a second consecutive league victory.
In what can only be described as a totally horrid game, in which neither side seemed to settle or be able to control the ball. Indeed many of the 36 spectators may have been more entertained staying at home and watching their central heating boilers click on and off than watching this tepid affair.
A debatable second half penalty from Adam Hayton gave Welfare the lead and Connor Glavin hit home the very last kick of the game to seal victory.
Welfare made one change to the side that had defeated Brigg Town in midweek with Ashley Scothern replacing dual registered Greg Hunter who was recalled by Ossett Albion.
On a poor playing surface welfare nearly fell behind after two minutes when keeper Dan Waring struggled to clear a 50/50 ball.
At the other end Josh Morley had a low shot parried and he then drilled another ball in but Scothern was unable to connect.
Mike Pecora, for the home side, had a great chance cleared and Andrew Lewis hit a shot well wide.
Both sides seemed to struggle on the pitch and each side were guilty of poor passes. Home ‘keeper Derek Peat made comfortable saves in the first half from Ryan Poskitt, Morley, Glavin and a headed chance from Scothern. The keeper also had his hands stung by a rasping shot from Scothern just before half time.
On the resumption the home side had a couple of chances. Pecora hit a wild shot over the bar and then Waring made a good block with his feet. The keeper was also untroubled by shots from range as the home side seemed to get on top.
The game came to life a little on 60 minutes when Morley hit a great ball into the home area and Callum Harrison’s header was pushed over the bar by Peat.
Ryan Poskitt then sliced a shot wide before welfare took the lead on 75 minutes via a very debatable penalty award. Nathan Keightley went through on goal and Peat got his hands to the ball as he challenged Keightley. The young welfare striker went down and referee Thomas Cadman pointed to the spot. Hayton converted the resultant penalty kick.
Home substitute Danny Holiday shot well over for the home side before Waring made a low save from the same player,
Welfare sealed the points, three minutes into added time when a Keightley shot was parried by Peat and Glavin hammered the loose ball home.

“It was hard work today for both sides on a heavy and sticky pitch. We said to the lads that there would not be a lot of football played on the pitch and that we had to grind out a result. That’s what we did. Ash Scothern worked hard up front all afternoon and helped to link up the play. Another goal fro Connor Glavin and we now look forward to the massive derby at Pontefract on Tuesday.”
