Interim manager Josh Wright pulled off an incredible victory as second-placed Winterton Rangers were felled by a patched Worsbrough Bridge side.
Worsbrough were massively helped by the sending off of former Selby Town goalkeeper Robert Zand, but should not take anything away from a win achieved against the odds.
Lee Garside and Dean Shirt were two of many heroes for Bridge with the goals. Shirt more so with his last minute winner.
The win must surely put Wright in the driving seat for the permanent position – which is vacant because of Ian Shirt’s resignation on Thursday night.
Wright did not have a goalkeeper at 11pm on Friday night and he had to use reserve goalkeeper Stephen Haynes in the end. He also had several under 19s playing.
Bridge were outstanding. They stuck to Wright’s game-plan and frustrated high-flying Winterton.
Zand’s red card for handling the ball outside his area helped massively, but they still needed to defend well.
On the counter attack, with Mitchell Wilshire leading the charge, Bridge were excellent.
Former Stocksbridge forward Garside broke the deadlock late on with a rocket.
Matthew Bradley did seemingly deny Bridge their win with the equaliser for Winterton, but on this occasion luck was on Worsbrough’s side.
Shirt, the son of now former manager Ian, sparked scenes of jubilation with a fine strike from 20 yards.
