Eccleshill United 1-2 Glasshoughton Welfare
Super sub Ollie Maude made a spectacular comeback for Glasshoughton by scoring the late winner at Eccleshill United.
Maude only returned from a brief spell at Selby Town this week and his goal completed Glasshoughton’s second half fight-back.
Eccleshill got off to a dream start after two minutes when Welfare’s Andrew McManus lost the ball on the halfway line. Luke Harrop then lobbed the ball over Andy Holland into the far corner as the keeper closed him down.
The home side should have been two goals up a minute later when Holland only half smothered a through ball at the edge of the penalty area and the Charlie Flaherty hit the loose ball just over the crossbar. Another effort was then blocked by the Welfare defence as they struggled to contain the home attack.
Welfare came close after ten minutes when Connor Glavin headed a corner just wide and then the same player forced home keeper Ben Higginson into a low save. Not long after this the keeper managed to flick away an effort from Ashley Scothern. Callum Harrison headed a corner just over as Welfare came back into the game, but at the other end Liam Hudson fired in a long range shot that Holland managed to palm away from under the bar.
Just before the halftime break Harrison headed another corner just wide of goal.
Welfare started the second half much stronger although Holland had to be on his guard as speculative long shot was held. Glavin hit a shot just over the bar as Welfare got on top.
The equaliser came on the hour Firstly a cross from the left gave Andy Horbury a headed chance that the tall striker completely missed. However, seconds later he was handily placed at the far post as a ball from the right from Josh Morley reached him and he nodded past Higginson.
Straight after this welfare attacked again. Horbury attacked down the right and he crossed but Glavin’s shot fell into the arms of the ‘keeper.
Welfare got the winning goal on eighty minutes when the ball was played quickly out of defence to Morley on the left. He cut in and played the ball to Maude who turned and fired past Higginson.
What They Said
Glasshoughton Welfare joint manager Lee Vigars
“We’re doing it tough at the moment with a number of injuries throughout the squad and added with the suspension of skipper Adam Hayton, but the lads really showed some guts today after going behind early on.
“Although the surface was fantastic, the wind made it a tricky game and we did just enough to take all 3 points. Again Ash Scothern led the line superbly with Andy Horbury turning in a great performance in an unfamiliar position. He scored a well deserved goal as did the impressive Olly Maude when coming on at halftime. That is now five wins from our last 6 games so we continue to push for a play offs place.”
