Simpson fires Garforth up to eighth

Toolstation NCEL Premier Division

Retford United 1-3 Garforth Town

Mark Simpson’s two goals propelled resurgent Garforth Town to their fifth league win in six games and up to eighth in the table.

The position is the highest that Garforth have held since October 2015 and it highlights the progress made by the Miners under Rob Hunter.

His “loyal and passionate” side were excellent in the first half. On an atrocious pitch, Garforth’s strong attack ran through Retford’s defence with ease.

Prior to the opener, Simpson beat five defenders before hitting the crossbar. Eventually he broke the deadlock after getting in behind Retford’s back four.

He soon added the second after chasing down Retford’s goalkeeper and forcing a mis-cued clearance.

Simon Mowbray pulled a goal back for Retford after half-time and there were a few nervy moments for the Miners.

But they held on and a Sean Hunter penalty in the dying seconds sealed the victory.
