Returning hero Kieran Scargill dramatically scored the winner in the dying moments to secure an impressive away win for Athersley.

The Rec got off to an excellent start at Bottesford, a notoriously difficult place to visit. Kai Hancock’s parried cross-cum-shot fell to the dangerous Lee Garside, who then placed the Rec ahead on 18 minutes.

Despite their best, the Rec were unable to extend their lead, enabling Paul Grimes to equalise for the home side.

But Athersley persevered and went close on a couple of occasions. With seconds running out, Scargill, making his comeback for the Rec and on a substitute for Hancock, scored from an impossible angle to spark ecstasy.

It was too much to take for Bottesford’s Lee Ridley who was then sent off for kicking out after the goal.
