Selby awarded three penalties in draw

Selby Town 2-2 Brigg Town

Scott Jones scored a penalty and missed another in Selby’s 2-2 draw with Brigg Town

Selby Town scored two penalties and missed another in the ill-tempered draw with Brigg Town.

Scott Jones and Liam Flanagan – the latter scoring with eight minutes to go – struck the penalties in a game that had 11 cautions, six for Brigg and five for Selby.

Although level of dissent should have been toned down, no-one could argue with the effort from both sets of players.

James Wroot placed Brigg ahead in 14 minutes after a manic scramble in the Selby 18-yard-box.

Two penalties were then correctly awarded to Selby in quick succession. Jones was fouled by Ash Andrew for the first one and the striker confidently covered the spot kick to Dan Waring’s right.

Former Glasshoughton stopper Waring then hauled Jones down moments later. The goalkeeper redeemed himself by diving to his right and saving the penalty from Jones, who had chosen the same spot as his earlier successful first kick.

Selby enjoyed most of the possession in the second half, but failed to find the killer touch.

They nearly paid the price as Brigg caught them out on the counter attack with just 13 minutes to go. Ryan Thompson added the finishing touches after a marvellous run by David Deane.

Fortunately, Calum Ward was felled within a few minutes and Flanagan confidently fired home the penalty.

Ref Rating

Jack Hall (10/10)

Some will say that Mr Hall lost the plot with the large haul of yellow cards, but more-or-less every single one was justified. He also got the big decisions right with the penalties. Not many would be brave enough to award three.
