Here is the 17th in our weekly series profiling players across the region. Each week a different player will reveal their best (and worst) moments. This week it is the turn of inspirational Thackley captain Paddy McGuire.
Name: Paddy McGuire
Age: 29
Current Club: Thackley
Position: Central midfield
Previous Clubs: Bradford City, Farsley Celtic, Buxton, Glapwell, Ossett Town, Wakefield, Harrogate Railway (amongst others!)
Day Job: Primary school teacher
Best mate in football: Mark Trueman (Silsden)
Description of Career Highlight: Making my debut for Bradford City against Scunthorpe United in the Football League Trophy in 2006.
Lowest Moment in Football: Let me get the list out…
Description of Most Memorable Match: In recent times the game against Maltby at their place. We drew 3-3 but I scored two…both directly from corners!
First semi-professional manager: Ash Berry (Woodley Sports), top man,
Description of First Red Card (at semi-professional level): Two yellows against Handsworth. One for mouthing off and a One for a late challenge.
Description of First Goal (at semi-professional level): A screamer for Woodley Sports against Fc United of Manchester! Their keeper parried a shot that hit me on the shoulder from a yard out and went in.
Description of favourite goal (at semi-professional level): For Ossett Town against Frickley. Hit a half volley sweet from 25 yards with my left foot that went in off the post.
What do you want to achieve in football in the future: Win promotion one day with Thackley. A big ask, but hopefully after a couple tough years we’re starting to head in the right direction. The lads and the gaffer (Chris Reape) all deserve a thank you for their loyalty as they have stuck together without pay for two years. Hopefully now we’re starting to see the rewards of that. Its a long season and were operating on what I’m sure is the smallest budget in the league, but we’ll keep quietly going about our business and hopefully we will still be in the mix come the end of the season.
Favourite Non League Ground to play at (barring your own club): Chester FC. Lovely ground, big crowds, nice to feel like a pro again playing there for Wakefield.
