Ossett hit by late sucker punch

Evo Stik Division One North

Ossett Town 1-2 Colne

Ossett Town defender Tyrone Gay forced his side’s equaliser

A 93rd minute sucker punch condemned Ossett Town to a home defeat to Colne.

The cruel ending was very harsh on high-flying Ossett who were on top for most of the game.

Having fallen behind on the stroke of half-time, Grant Black’s men fought their way back into it through a Nosakhare Aghayere own goal. If there was going to a winner, Ossett seemed to be the favourites until Mark Ayres struck..

The reverse means Ossett are now third and six points behind leaders Lancaster City.

There was little between the sides when Oliver Wood turned past Town defender Tyrone Gay and finished with a low and hard drive.

Ossett’s response in the second half was very good. The home side had a series of half-chances as the pressure mounted on Colne. Eventually it told. Gay used brute force to create an opening in the six-yard box and his cross was diverted into his own net by Aghayere.

Ossett’s domination continued without the Colne goalkeeper being properly tested. As Black said in his interview, Ossett made the mistake of going all out attack to win the game instead of settling for a draw.

The cavalier approach led to Colne catching them out on a couple of occasions on the counter attack. The second time was costly as Colne won a free kick in a dangerous area and from which Ayres pounced.
