Mark Simpson is mobbed after scoring for a record-breaking ninth game in a row
Unstoppable Mark Simpson has broken Richard Ramsden’s 20-year-old club record at Garforth Town after scoring in a ninth consecutive game.
Simpson’s injury-time free kick in the 2-0 win over Liversedge was the history-making moment – enabling him to surpass Ramsden’s record of scoring in eight successive matches way back in 1997.
Since striking in the Boxing Day defeat to Parkgate, Simpson’s form has been unbelievable and his run of goals has taken him to 25 for the season.
The record cements his place as Garforth’s most popular striker since the days of Adam Priestley and Paul Walker. His form has coincided with Garforth enjoying their best period of form since the 2012 glory days under Steve Nichol, Garforth’s most successful manager in recent memory.
But it did look like the record would not be broken during Garforth’s latest win.
The referee Luke Watson had played one minute over the signal four additional minutes when Garforth were awarded a free kick on the edge of their box.
Simpson immediately grabbed the ball and although the strike was weak, a deflection helped it past ‘Sedge goalkeeper Sam Andrew.
The striker threw both his arms in the air to celebrate as his team-mates raced to mob him.
