Former York City striker Ian Blackstone is helping Garforth Town out in pre-season

Garforth Town have one of York City’s most popular strikers of the last 25 years helping them in pre-season.

Miners head honcho Rob Hunter his old pal Ian Blackstone to come out of the wilderness and return to Non League to replace Mark Greaves who has taken charge of West Yorkshire League giants Beaston St Anthony’s.

Blackstone will be assisting Hunter and his new assistant Mark Smitheringale during the friendly season.

After leaving York in 1994, Blackstone went onto be one of Northern Premier League’s most feared strikers during his free-scoring partnership with friend Robbie Whellans at Farsley Celtic.

The pair then went onto enjoy more success with Harrogate Town at the turn of the millennium – helping chairman Bill Fotherby and manager John Reed turn their promotion dream into a reality in 2002.
