Nostell Miners Welfare manager Des Hazel

Former Rotherham United defender Des Hazel is the new manager of Nostell Miners Welfare, Non League Yorkshire can exclusively reveal.

One-time Saint Kitts and Nevis International Hazel will work with director of football Mark Booth and player/coach Wayne Ball in trying to make sure Nostell take advantage of the reprieve they recieved.

Chairman Kevin Allsop hopes the appointment will be the catalyst for a brighter future at the Crofton Community Stadium.

Nostell went through four managers last season – Graham Nicholas, Chris Ellerby, Terry Bates and Mark Booth – and deservedly finished bottom after a disastrous year. Only three games were won all season.

Hazell, the father of Frickley striker Jacob, is a former head of youth development at FC Halifax Town.

“We’re really positive and it is now about getting pulling a squad together to try and be competitive this season,” Mr Allsop told Non League Yorkshire.

“We haven’t got the biggest budget, but we’ll do our best.

“We’re not going to have a repetition of last season when we had four managers, who in turn brought in a different squad of players. We don’t want the comings and goings anymore.

“We want players who are passionate about Nostell Miners Welfare and are here for the right reasons.

“We have arguably the best facilities and pitch in the league and we need to utilise them.

“We now have a former Football League player who has International Caps managing us. He’s probably the most qualified manager we have ever had at the club.

“The standard of coaching is very high and I’m very pleased we have appointed him.

“I spoke to Mark Booth yesterday and he said to me that Des is a great bloke and that we had made the right decision. Let’s hope it is.

“I’ve said before that we want a sporting director model at the club and I believe we have got that in place now.

“Mark, Des and Wayne are working together brilliantly. We want to attract local talent to the club and I think we will with the three of them.

“I also want to especially welcome back Wayne as I think his experience will be invaluable this season.”
