Nostell are not far off – Hazel

New Nostell Miners Welfare manager Des Hazel

Although he admits he needs a few more players, new manager Des Hazel believes Nostell Miners Welfare are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

Hazel is leading the latest revolution at Nostell with chairman Kevin Allsop, director of football Mark Booth and player/coach Wayne Ball.

He watched his new-look Nostell get beaten 2-0 by West Yorkshire League Premier Division champions Carlton Athletic last night – a defeat that has given him food for thought.

“In all honesty, you could see it as a workout in terms of fitness levels,” Hazel told Non League Yorkshire, in his first interview since becoming the new manager at Crofton.

“Carlton were efficient and they looked after the ball.

“They looked like they knew what they were doing and they looked like a team which has played together for a period of time.

“I’m looking at a lot of players and we’re trying them in different roles and different positions.

“I don’t think I’ve had a settled side in the three games so far.

“I also think we’re two weeks behind. We’re still looking at a large amount of personnel and I’ve got to be brutally honest on that showing that I’m very undecided in some cases.

“There may be yet still a few faces to come in and I do envisage that happening.

“A lot of players have come to us, but we have worked hard by speaking to contacts of mine, (chairman Kevin Allsop) Kevin’s, along with Mark (Booth) and Wayne (Ball).

“We’ve had quite a few players at training and at matches as we don’t want a repeat of last season. We want a settled squad and we’re not million miles away from where we want to be.”
