Vill Powell is close to finalising his new-look Brighouse Town team for the new season.

Former Goole AFC and Sheffield FC striker Powell, in his first managerial post as a number one, has been thrown in the deep end at Brighouse as only three players remain from last season – Adam Field, Adam Shaw and Tom Haigh.

It has meant Powell has had to cast his net wide and far to assemble a squad and he reckons he’s nearly finished.

“From last season there is three so we have had to lead a complete overhaul of the squad,” Powell told Non League Yorkshire.

“It is about starting afresh and building that familiarity. We have got quality in the side and I’m confident we’ll be very competitive this year.

“With what we have recruited, I’m very pleased. There is still areas we need to strengthen in and I will strengthen.

“The squad of players we have had in the last few weeks will be narrowed down now and it will be about building familiarity on the training ground.

“We have the bulk of the squad in place, but we need a few cherries on top just to make sure we’re fighting at the right end of the table during the season.

“I’m still looking at probably signing another two on top of what we already have signed. At a push, maybe three, but no more than that.”

Brighouse travel to Eccleshill United tonight, 48 hours after the 2-1 defeat at Penistone Church – a game which Powell learned a lot from.

“It was a game where I wanted to give people a fair crack of the whip and give them the chance to show me what they can do,” he said.

“Unfortunately some have fallen short and it confirmed some of my thoughts on where we are.

“I’ll have conversations with some in the next few days to let them know what the situation is.”
