Athersley Rec’s hearts were broken after Worksop Town scored the winner three minutes from time.

The Rec had given everything against one of the Division’s fancied sides. Although Jake Currie gave Worksop the lead, Athersley soon back through Kyle Wordsworth.

Liam Greenfield would put Worksop ahead in the 82nd minute, but Lee Garside popped up with an equaliser.

However, Athersley would be denied a point when Matthew Thompson struck.

What They Said

Athersley Rec

“Well best to say gutted for the lads because the better side lost. Every player did exactly what they were asked to do, we didn’t go there to let Worksop dictate to us we took the game to them.

“Our formation set up worked well and although they were well organised we matched them man for man right across the park basic errors let us down and handing two of the goals on a plate.

“We can definitely come away from Sandy Lane being proud of how they have played and build on that going forward.”

The Team
