Armthorpe Welfare 2-0 Selby Town

Armthorpe celebrate: Steve Pennock

Armthorpe Welfare got their first win of the season under their belt with a comfortable win over Selby Town at Church Street, courtesy of well taken goals from Liam Radford and Darren Mansaram.

Welfare could have been ahead just 26 seconds after kick off when Jordan Emery’s cross from the left found Gary Collier at the far post and his first time angled shot beat Selby ‘keeper Gareth Dickinson but struck the opposite post.

Five minutes later it was Adam Stevens’ turn to be called into action when he was forced to tip a speculative 35 yard effort from Charlie Clamp over the bar.

On 14 minutes Mansaram and Radford combined inside the box to set up Collier but his close range shot was blocked by Dickinson’s legs whilst at the other end Stevens made a good save to stop an angled shot from Bradley Freer.

Selby came close on 26 minutes when a cross from the left was hit first time by Chris Dempsey at the far post but his shot was kept out by a combination of Stevens and the post.

The game changed a minute later as Will Ramsay sent Radford sprinting clear and he held off the challenge of a defender before composing himself and firing past Dickinson from 15 yards.

Welfare grew in confidence and had claims for a penalty rejected on 41 minutes when Emery appeared to be felled inside the box following a corner.

Three minutes after half time Welfare doubled their lead with a great strike from Mansaram. Mo Selassie played the ball in to the powerful striker on the edge of the box and with his back to goal he did well to hold his defender off before turning to fire into the top right hand corner from just inside the box.

Four minutes later Ramsay rattled the right hand post from 25 yards with Mansaram then having a close range header pushed away by Dickinson as Welfare looked to run riot.

Ramsay went close again on 59 minutes when he headed a Chris Gowen corner against the crossbar and on 73 minutes Welfare had another penalty claim waved away, this time for what looked like a certain hand ball offence.

Selby threatened briefly with 12 minutes to go when a well-worked move saw Dempsey burst clear inside the box but Stevens was out quickly to thwart him.

Substitute Morgan Brough had a chance to add a third goal on 86 minutes when fellow-sub Wayne Brook played the ball to him 12 yards out but his sliced his shot straight at Dickinson.
