Fox’s Selby claim higher league scalp

West Riding County Cup

Andrew Metcalfe set Selby Town up for a famous West Riding County Cup victory with the equaliser to force penalties

Selby Town celebrated a deserved higher league scalp after beating National League outfit Bradford (Park Avenue) 7-6 on penalties.

The magical journey that Christian Fox is taking them on is continuing at a high speed and Selby officials and fans will be smiling as they tuck into their Rice Krispies this morning.

Andrew Metcalfe’s 89th minute wonder strike for Selby had forced a stalemate against Avenue, who had led since Bradley Oliver’s tenth minute goal.

The floodgates could have easily have opened, but Fox’s brilliant young side never fail to amaze.

Selby were the far better side, they just not score as Avenue goalkeeper Ed Hall kept out chance after chance.

That was until Metcalfe’s thunderbolt was too powerful for him – a goal that Selby more than deserved.

The quality of penalties from both sides were top notch. Only three were missed – Ryan Gothard for Selby, and Ryan Sewell and Bobby Athey for Avenue.

Athey’s effort which crashed back off the crossbar won the tie, but there should be praise for teenage Selby star Harry Bissett who showed nerves of steel to score the successful spot kick which paved the way for victory.

Selby will now face FC Halifax Town in the next round.

Pontefract Collieries defeated Yorkshire Amateur 4-1 at Beechnut Lane. Mikey Dunn, Jack Greenhough and Eli Hey (2) found the net.

Garforth Town were beaten 6-0 by a strong Guiseley side.

  1. A bit biased James, no mention of Avenue fielding 7 academy players, no doubt Bower wanting out of competition

  2. A bit biased? The report is completely accurate, Selby dominated the game and could have hit half a dozen goals. There is no mention in the report that several of Selby’s first choice players were missing, it doesn’t make it biased.

  3. A very well deserved win for selby town, by far the better team on the night, do love an excuse, “7 academy players” ” wanting out of competition “, if result had gone other way, it wud be “how great academy is”. If manager gives them a shirt he obviously thinks they are good enough, why not be graceful and just say well done Selby, the only thing that let robins down last night was their finishing in front of goal in open play, and some great saves from bradfords keeper, who had a really good game, with Bradford being several leagues above selby, be they academy or 1st team players the manager must of thought them good enough to beat selby on the night. Now just want to wish BPA all the best for the rest of their season, and #uptherobins

  4. Well done with our young side and wasn’t our winning penalty scored by a sixteen year. – Do i hear academy players ?

  5. Are you suggesting that the manager fielded 7 academy players because he wants out of the competition? I’m sure those players will be pleased to know the manager has no faith in them whatsoever. It’s not a compulsory cup anyway, so why would the club enter a cup they don’t want to be in?

  6. Or maybe they fielded 7 academy players as they assumed it would be an easy win?A fantastic game with Selby the deserved winners.
