Two players from Nostell Miners Welfare’s new Disability Football team will attend trials for the 2018 Mencap GB squad in January.
Callum Spedding and David Moulds will aim to win a place in the team that will compete at the European Championships in Geneva in Switzerland next summer.
NLY Community Sport coaches Connor Rollinson and James Grayson, who run sessions for Nostell and the Pontefract Pirates, said: “It is fantastic news for Callum and David, plus for Nostell.
“What is even more fantastic is that Callum and David were not actively playing football until we started the sessions at Nostell in September.
“Along with rest of the lads, they have come a long way in just three months. To already have two players going for trials is brilliant for the club and shows to people who might be interested in joining us, the kind of opportunities that are available.
“Callum and David won’t be the last to get an opportunity like this.
“Whilst the football is important, we firmly believe that the social aspect is the key part.
“Our ideology is all about seeing progression in our players in not just football ability, but socially. as well.
“We want to look back in five years’ time and see huge progression and opportunities like this with Mencap are massively important.”
The trials are taking place at Crofton Community Centre and Nostell chairman Kevin Allsop said: “I’m delighted that Callum and David are going for trials and I wish them all the best.
“The team has only been running three months and there has been steady progress.
“The news is a terrific advert and I hope more new players are recruited off the back of it.”
The Nostell Miners Welfare Disability Football Team train every Friday between 6pm and 7pm at Crofton Community Centre.
