Wood lights the spark to fire Albion up

Evo Stik North

Ossett Albion 3-1 Atherton Collieries

Tommy Wood scored twice for Ossett Albion

The only way is up for Ossett Albion now, surely. First half substitute Tommy Wood came off the bench and scored twice to fire Albion to a victory which will surely kick-start the ambitious era at Dimple Wells.

Albion have needed a spark for a few weeks and the much-needed win creates a six-point gap between them and basement club Goole AFC and puts them in touch with the teams above them.

The victory was their first victory under new manager Andy Welch.

The opening half hour had little of interest and at that point Adam Priestley had to be replaced by Wood due to injury. Shortly afterwards a long ball out of defence found Aidan Chippendale. He beat the defender and sent the ball across to Wood who slotted it home to give Albion the lead.

Straight after the interval Albion came close to doubling their lead but the final ball struck the post and bounced clear. The game became end to end and gradually Atherton began to apply pressure. This eventually gave them an equaliser when a shot from Gareth Peet struck the post and went in.

Albion had saved the best until the final ten minutes of the match. A ball into the Atherton box was cleared to Scott Metcalfe who rifled his shot across the goalkeeper to give Albion the lead again.

Three minutes later a free kick from the left was floated to the far post and Wood was there to fire it home for his second of the match.
