Brigg Town 0-4 Glasshoughton Welfare
Glasshoughton Welfare are well-and-truly play-offs contenders now after a fairly-straightforward win a bottom-side Brigg Town.
Conor Glavin’s two first half goals set Welfare on their way and a further two from Andy Horbury in the second period settled the game. Despite their lowly position Brigg battled hard and Welfare keeper Matt Zaniewski had to make two fine saves in order to keep a clean sheet
In the race for a play off place, the only downside for Welfare was the fact that Selby Town claimed a point at Worsborough Bridge and Winterton beat Yorkshire Amateur. But the victory at Brigg keeps the pressure firmly on Selby.
Ryan Ferguson and Gareth Hunter came back into the Welfare starting eleven from the side that had drawn against Winterton 48 hours earlier with Mitch Wilshire and Lewis Akeister making way.
Welfare were on top from the start with Connor Rollinson seeing his 25 yard shot just clearing the home crossbar.
Welfare took the lead on eight minutes when Rollinson took the ball down the right and his cross was met by Glavin who powered his 18 yards shot past home keeper Pat Shaw.
Two minutes later welfare doubled their lead. Rollinson forced a corner which was delivered by James Kay and Glavin’s ferocious header went in via the underside of the crossbar.
It could have been three a minute later but Shaw did well to palm a Tom Carr header away.
At the other end Myles Lawman flashed a shot just wide of a post and Nathan Watson also hit an effort wide. Ten minutes from the end of the first half Zaniewski did well to push an effort from Joe Moloney for a corner
Welfare were looking to put the game to bed as the second half began, Glavin was blocked out as he looked to shoot. Carr headed just wide of a post and a 30 yards screamer from Alex Marsh appeared to clip the bar with Shaw beaten.
Shaw certainly kept the score down doing well to save low shots from Glavin and Carr whist at the other end Zaniewski came to the rescue foiling Jonny Nicholls shot with a fine block.
With 15 minutes left welfare got their third with a sumptuous volley from Horbury. The ball rebounded off a home player 30 yards out and Horbury’s strike cannoned down off the bar and into the net.
Horbury should have had his second minutes later when through on goal but with only Shaw to beat he lifted his effort over the bar. Substitute Jamie Simpson was then unlucky when his clinical effort from a cross was somehow cleared off the line by the foot of a defender.
Welfare completed the scoring just before the end when Horbury headed home from a Marsh corner.
What They Said
Glasshoughton Welfare joint manager Lee Vigars
“Fair play to our boys today after working hard for the full 90 minutes and taking home the points less than 48 hours after an extremely tiring and energy sapping game against play off rivals Winterton Rangers. We gave everything on Thursday night and ended up with a good point against a good organised side.
“We did have a chance to win it late on when Mitch Wilshere was played in from a Tom Carr header but he just couldn’t find the power to beat the keeper. But that point is now an even better one as we have backed it up with a good away win in Scunthorpe.
“Brigg made us work today and although we were 2-0 up early they never stopped coming at us. Conor Glavin’s double made the scoreline comfortable at the break and an outstanding volley and header from Andy Horbury in the second half settled the game. We now move onto Rossington Main next week at our place in another vital game.”
