Toolstation NCEL Division One
Winterton Rangers 0-5 Nostell Miners Welfare
Striker Joe Thornton was in goal for Nostell Miners Welfare as Jack Owen scored a hat-trick to help end a run of three straight defeats in magnificent fashion.
Adam Knight and Jimmy Greenhough also struck in the dreamland victory – one that should ease any fears that the resurgent club will get dragged back into relegation danger.
The clean sheet continues Thornton’s run of not conceding a goal during stints between the sticks in the NCEL. During the 2014/15 season, Thornton twice went in goal for Premier Division champions Shaw Lane and kept a clean sheet – most notably in the crucial win at Heanor Town.
In respect of Winterton, their play-offs bid went up in smoke in spectacular style, if it hadn’t already. The battle for sixth spot is definitely now a three-horse race between Glasshoughton Welfare, Hallam and Selby Town.
Knight scored in the first half. Greenhough then added his contribution straight after half-time, just before Owen netted his first.
Winterton were then reduced to ten men before Owen got completed his treble with two goals in quick succession.
