Maltby Main’s Muglet Lane is going to be packed to the rafters with over 100 dogs and lots of Pontefract Collieries fans hoping to see their team win promotion.
It is certainly going to be noisy occasion as the Colls will secure an historic promotion to the Evo Stik if they beat Maltby, who themselves are aiming to become a Guinness world record holder.
Main are looking to break the record for the number of dogs at a Non League football match – believed to be 31 – and raise money for Support Dogs, a national charity that provides dogs to help those who suffer with autism and epilepsy.
Maltby chairman Wilf Race told Non League Yorkshire: “The old saying in football is ‘one man and his dog’ and that’s how Maltby used to be, seriously.
“We used to get crowds of 30 and usually half a dozen of them were one man and his dog.
“There’s that Twitter account @nonleaguedogs and we have our own champion of dogs called George that one of our supporters brings up. He’s a great British Bulldog.
“He’s sort of being our mascot for a few years. So we came up with this idea of dog day and it is going to be a fantastic day. We want to get the community involved with the club and dog day certainly does.
“We’re hoping for one hundred dogs. There is a concern that with that many dogs there will be a lot of snapping and snarling. Will it make for a noisy day? Probably.
“But we should remember that we are also aiming to raise money for Support Dogs which is a fantastic charity.”
