Garforth on brink of best finish since NCEL return

Toolstation NCEL Premier Division

Harrogate Railway 0-2 Garforth Town

Prodigal son Mark Simpson scored ten seconds into the second half of Garforth’s 2-0 win at Harrogate Railway

Garforth Town can finish in their highest position since returning to the NCEL in 2013 if they win one of their final three matches.

The Miners put themselves in that position after picking up a win that consigned Harrogate Railway to relegation.

Garforth enjoyed a brilliant start to the decade under one of their greatest managers Steve Nichol, but ownership problems came and in turn did a drop into the NCEL. Since then there has been two 14th placed finishes, plus 16th and 15th finishes.

It was excellent victory at Station View considering the Miners still have a centre-back crisis. With key man Luke McCrum injured and captain marvel James Beaston suspended, attacker Lee Turner was forced to play at the back.

He did extremely well for Garforth, who took the lead in the 30th minute thanks to Calum Ward’s strike.

Prodigal son Mark Simpson increased Garforth’s lead ten seconds into the second half.

Garforth play Barton Town, Hall Road Rangers and Athersley Rec over the next few days.
