Selby Town 8-0 FC Bolsover
Swashbuckling Selby Town’s play-offs charge is over despite the annihilation of FC Bolsover as Glasshoughton Welfare won at Worsbrough Bridge to take sixth spot.
But there should be no disappointment as Christian Fox’s superheroes have totally raised the bar and the heavy victory took them over the 100 goals mark – something not achieved at Selby since Winston Churchill was prime minister in 1952.
Liam Flanagan scored five times in their latest win.
The game kicked off and it didn’t take long to become evident that there was a huge gap in class between the teams. Selby cut through the Bolsover defence almost at will. They had several chances to score before the ball was squared to Gary Collier to open Town’s account. Bolsover were being overrun by town’s midfield, with Danny Snaith showing particularly well. The opposition defence simply could not cope with the pace and trickery of Selby’s front three. It was inevitable that the Robins would add to their score and sure enough Liam Flanagan was able to bag his hat-trick before half time, and Joe Dale seemed to dribble past half the Bolsover team before slotting the ball home.
Bolsover showed little in attack although Josh Archer had to make a smart save when an opposition forward was through on goal. Probably the only real save he needed to make all game. 5-0 at half time so the three points were in the bag, and it was only a matter of whether Selby would reach a hundred goals for the season, before full time.
Bolsover dropped deep and defended in numbers to make it harder for Selby, but still Town created chances. It wasn’t long before Liam Flanagan netted his fourth of the night via a wicked deflection. The game then became scrappy with neither side creating much by way of clear cut chances.
However, this didn’t last and Liam Flanagan bagged his fifth of the night, and thirty fifth of a prolific season.
Ryan Woodhead completed the scoring just before the full time whistle, and in doing so brought up Selby’s one hundredth league goal. This is a terrific effort when compared with the sixty-one scored last season, and reflects the excellent attacking football savoured so much by the Selby faithful.
