Selby Town 2-1 Dronfield Town
Super-sub Sam Cable has given Christian Fox’s Selby Town superheroes hope of claiming an FA Cup place for the first time in years.
Selby go into Thursday night’s final game of the season against Swallownest knowing victory will guarantee seventh place and chance of playing in the ‘greatest cup competition in the world’.
If they pull it off Fox and his loyal sidekick Jonny Bruce will have raised the bar even higher that they will have to get on the weights in the gym during the summer to keep it that high.
To beat Dronfield was a remarkable achievement in itself as only 24 hours earlier, Selby had swept FC Bolsover aside in an 8-0 battering. As Bruce would say, Selby had “no pressure” on them with Glasshoughton securing the last play-offs on Monday night. No-one expected Selby to win for the second time in 48 hours – especially when magic man Joe Dale hobbled off after 20 minutes.
However, the home fans did not need to worry as Cable was ready to come on and get the Selby supporters jumping up and down in unbridled celebration.
Without going as far to over-egg the pudding over his display, it was fair to say Cable was dangerous and he was in the right place at the right time to put Selby in front with a tap-in.
Selby tired in the second half, but Cable gave them a good 2-0 lead to hold onto on the hour mark.
Thomas Fairweather headed Dronfield back into it and there were some nervy moments towards the end. But the points and a fourth straight win belonged to Selby.
